Bone Density Measurement

Excellus is a type of bone densitometer that uses Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) technology to assess bone density. It is manufactured by OsteoSys and features Fan Beam technology for faster and more accurate measurements.

Excellus Features

The Excellus system offers several features for the comprehensive assessment of bone health and body composition:

  • DXA Technology: Uses dual-energy X-rays to measure bone mineral density (BMD).

  • Fast Scan: Fan Beam technology allows for fast scans, such as a femur scan in just 19 seconds.

  • Measurement Areas: Can measure bone density in various areas of the body, such as the spine, hip, forearm, and hemithorax.

  • Additional Features:

  • Body Composition Analysis: Can analyze fat, lean mass, and bone mass, as well as determine fat distribution in areas such as the gynecomastia (hips) and the android (abdomen).

  • Orthopedic Features: Features for analyzing orthopedic applications, such as detecting hip prostheses and metal brackets.

  • Pediatric Evaluation: Offers the ability to measure bone density in children.

  • Fracture Risk Analysis: Provides an estimate of fracture risk for the next 10 years (FRAX).

  • Color Mapping: Provides detailed color mapping to visualize the results.

  • Flexibility: The machine's rotating scan head allows the table to be used for ultrasound examinations.

  • What is bone density measurement used for?

  • DXA bone density measurement is the most reliable test for diagnosing osteoporosis, a condition that makes bones weaker and more susceptible to fractures. The results of the measurement are expressed in T-scores and Z-scores, which help doctors assess the patient's bone health and determine the appropriate treatment.
